CSI Lowick

11th November 2024

Today the children were forensic scientists for our STEM Day.  They investigated a mysterious burglary at the school.  Luckily there were a few clues – shoe marks, fingerprints, a mask, gloves, a can of Dr Pepper, some chewing gum and some drops of blood.  There were also some eye witness accounts and a written note found.  The children were able to use their skills to collect the fingerprints and other evidence.  They matched up a broken tail light from a car, used chromatography to identify the ink on the note as well as matching handwriting.  They also dusted for fingerprints using the same brushes that the police use.

They were able to compare the DNA found at the scene to the dodgy suspects and identify the guilty parties.  The day ended with an entertaining court room with a strict judge and usher, an arresting police officer as well as some characters who were sentenced to prison for their crimes.

Altogether, a hugely engaging but scientific day which kept us engaged in Sci-High’s whodunit all the way through.  Thank you to Jon Bates for leading the day and making it work so well for our children.  Click here to see the video we made of our day which is saved under the photo / video gallery.
