Signed shirt from Lucy Bronze

14th February 2023

The children of Lowick and Holy Island Schools were delighted to welcome the family of footballer Lucy Bronze MBE into school today. Since Lucy was part of the cup winning Euro 2022 Lionesses team, the children in school have been keen to learn more about her and her many footballing achievements.

Lucy was born in Berwick, lived on Holy Island and went to school in Belford and Alnwick. Holy Island teacher, Holy Islander Thelma Dunne is Lucy's great aunt and has previously visited the school to talk about the Lizzie Porter rescue 100 years ago.   Through these family links we were thrilled to discover that Lucy had organised a signed shirt to be presented to the school.

The presentation took place at Holy Island CE First School with Lucy's Auntie Julie, Grandma, Great Aunt Thelma and friend Margaret joining the children and staff. The children were very keen to meet Lucy's family and they had lots of questions to ask.

As the England shirt was unveiled, there was a great gasp of excitement from the children. One child said: "I can't believe we have an actual shirt from Lucy Bronze. It's amazing!"   The visit ended with a huge shout of, "Thank you Lucy!" from all the children and the staff.  The shirt is going up in pride of place in the Holy Island school entrance area.
